YA, it’s the genre that I always read. And then all of a sudden, I kinda lost my interest in it. This year I haven’t read a lot of YA at all. I’ve read thrillers, adult books and a bit of contemporary, but I just wasn’t feeling it and not picking up YA fantasy books. It made me think, did I grow out of it, am I getting too old? Well, I now know the answer… no! I just needed a break, I just needed something different.
This happens to me with loads of different things, but never with YA books… Sometimes when I eat something too often I get sick of it and I don’t like the taste anymore. I then just have to not eat it for a while and eventually, I’ll start craving it again. The same goes for music. I can put certain songs or albums on repeat for ages until I’ve had enough and move on to a different artist or album. Again, there’s always a time when I’ll go back to that album or that song. I guess you can compare it to that. I just go through phases. I grew sick of reading the same old YA books, it felt like every single book I read, blended into one and that every YA story was more or less the same.
But then I got an e-mail from a publisher, asking me if I wanted to receive an ARC of a YA book. I read the description and it actually sounded quite interesting. So I thought you know what, I’m just going to give it a try. And boy am I glad I did! The book I’m talking about is The Grace Year by Kim Liggett – I got the Dutch edition; Het Schaduwjaar. I received the book, started reading it and finished it a couple hours later. I absolutely loved it and gave it 5 stars! I will post a full review of this book soon. But my point is, I read a YA book, and I devoured it! So there was my answer, I have definitely not grown out of YA. And now all I want to do is pick up another YA book… Which I have now done. I started reading A Curse so Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer yesterday and so far I’m really liking it, it’s a Beauty and the Beast retelling. I honestly can not believe that I didn’t hear about this book earlier.
Because I haven’t been reading YA a lot, I’ve also been kind of out of it when it comes to what’s new in the YA world. So please tell me which new releases – or soon to be released – books I should definitely pick up. Because I’m all excited to dive into some YA books again!
